I have a lot of conflicted feelings about the news of Osama bin Laden’s death, but I think this is important to focus on. All of this imperialist gloating really makes me uncomfortable. I don’t think death should be something we cheer. I understand that this mean a lot of things to a lot of people, and I’m thankful for any feelings of closure that people have, who went through so much pain and suffering because of bin Laden. I just think that we need to think a lot more about peace, and about how militaristic and competitive and reductive we are sometimes. This is complex, and the people cheering and singing outside of the White House don’t seem to be considering those complexities, nor do the reporters. I don’t want people to be satisfied by death. I want them to be satisfied with actively working for peace.
